Noam Chomsky's framework treats grammar as a finite system of formal rules capable of generating the infinite set of grammatical sentences in a language. The framework launched modern theoretical linguistics by reframing the central question from describing surface patterns to characterizing the underlying competence that produces them. Generative grammar has gone through several distinct theoretical phases — Standard Theory, Government and Binding, Minimalism — each refining the formal apparatus, with the Minimalist Program being Chomsky's current articulation. Specific universal-grammar claims about innate linguistic structure have been increasingly contested by usage-based and constructionist alternatives.
