Optimality Theory

Optimality Theory (OT) is the linguistic framework — primarily applied to phonology but with substantial extensions to syntax, semantics, and morphology — articulated by Alan Prince and Paul Smolensky in their 1993 manuscript Optimality Theory: Constraint Interaction in Generative Grammar (substantially circulated and cited from manuscript before publication; published 2004). The framework substantially reframed generative phonology by replacing rule-based derivations with constraint-based evaluation: surface forms (the actual pronounced or written linguistic outputs) are selected from candidate sets (multiple possible outputs for any input) by a hierarchy of ranked, violable constraints. The framework's central commitments include: (1) Generator (GEN) — a function producing candidate set of possible outputs for any input; (2) Constraint set (CON) — universal set of constraints, with constraints from typologically-motivated families (Faithfulness constraints requiring outputs to match inputs; Markedness constraints favoring unmarked structures); (3) Hierarchical ranking — constraints are strictly ranked, with higher-ranked constraints absolutely dominating lower-ranked ones; (4) Evaluator (EVAL) — selects optimal candidate that violates fewer high-ranked constraints than competitors; (5) Cross-linguistic variation through different constraint rankings — same universal constraint set, different rankings produce different languages. OT substantially shaped generative phonology from the 1990s onward and produced substantial phonological literature, with substantial extensions including: Stochastic OT (Hayes, Boersma) handling probabilistic variation; Harmonic Grammar (Smolensky-Legendre) using weighted rather than strictly ranked constraints; substantial morphology and syntax applications. Critics including substantial recent work in phonology argue that OT's constraint-based architecture has substantial computational and explanatory limitations, with rule-based and exemplar-based alternatives gaining renewed attention.
