Constructivism (Education)
Learning as active construction of meaning rather than passive reception.
Constructivism in education holds that learners actively construct their own understanding through interaction between new information and prior knowledge, rather than receiving knowledge passively as transmitted content. The educational application descends from cognitive constructivism (Jean Piaget — schemas, assimilation, accommodation; learning through equilibration of cognitive structures) and social constructivism (Lev Vygotsky — zone of proximal development, mediation through cultural tools, learning as social activity preceding individual internalization), with substantial subsequent elaboration by Jerome Bruner (discovery learning, scaffolding, cultural psychology), Seymour Papert (constructionism — learning by building things, particularly via Logo and later programming), and others. The pedagogical implications include emphasis on prior knowledge activation, hands-on and experiential activities, problem-based and inquiry-based methods, social interaction and discourse, scaffolded support, and authentic tasks. Constructivism became dominant in many educational reform movements from the 1980s onward, but has drawn substantial empirical criticism — most prominently in Kirschner, Sweller, and Clark's 2006 'Why Minimal Guidance During Instruction Does Not Work', which argues that constructivist methods underweight the cognitive load demands of novice learners and that direct instruction is empirically more effective than discovery-based methods for most learning contexts. The pedagogy-vs-evidence debate continues actively.
