Connectivism

Connectivism was articulated by George Siemens in his 2004 essay 'Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age' (and elaborated by Stephen Downes in subsequent work) as a learning theory positioned for digital, networked learning environments. The framework's central claim is that learning is the process of forming and traversing networks of connections — among neurons, among ideas, and among people, technologies, and information sources — and that knowledge resides in the networks rather than in individual minds alone. Siemens articulates principles including: learning may reside in non-human appliances; nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning; ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill; currency (accurate up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist learning activities. Connectivism emerged contemporaneously with the early MOOCs (Siemens and Downes designed the first connectivist MOOC, CCK08, in 2008), and the framework substantially shaped early thinking about online networked learning. Whether connectivism is a genuinely new learning theory or a reinterpretation of social and distributed-cognition frameworks within a digital context remains contested — critics including Verhagen (2006) have argued that connectivism does not meet the criteria for a learning theory but is rather an instructional or curriculum approach.
