Inquiry-Based Learning is the broader category of pedagogical approaches in which students drive their own learning through questioning, investigation, and exploration, with teachers serving as facilitators rather than primary content sources. The framework descends from John Dewey's progressive education (How We Think, 1910) and Jerome Bruner's discovery learning (The Process of Education, 1960), with substantial contemporary development in science education (the 5E Model — Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate, developed by Roger Bybee and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study). Levels of inquiry are commonly distinguished by who controls the question, procedure, and answer: Confirmation Inquiry (teacher provides all three; student verifies known result); Structured Inquiry (teacher provides question and procedure; student finds answer); Guided Inquiry (teacher provides question; student designs procedure and finds answer); Open Inquiry (student does all three). Inquiry-Based Learning is the umbrella category that includes Project-Based and Problem-Based Learning as more structured variants, but encompasses also less-formal exploration and questioning approaches. Like other constructivist-aligned pedagogies, IBL has been substantially critiqued by cognitive-load research arguing that minimal-guidance approaches underweight novice-learner needs.
