The Value Proposition Canvas, introduced by Alexander Osterwalder, Yves Pigneur, Greg Bernarda, and Alan Smith in Value Proposition Design (2014), is a focused complement to the Business Model Canvas that zooms into two of its nine blocks — Value Propositions and Customer Segments — to provide more detailed structure for designing and validating product-market fit. The Customer Profile side decomposes the customer's situation into Jobs (functional, social, emotional), Pains (frustrations, obstacles, risks), and Gains (desired outcomes, benefits); the Value Map side decomposes the offering into Products & Services, Pain Relievers, and Gain Creators. 'Fit' between the two sides — particularly that pain relievers address ranked pains and gain creators address ranked gains — is the test of a strong value proposition.

- Like BMC, descriptive rather than predictive — provides structure for thinking without specifying analytical method
- jobs-pains-gains can be filled in plausibly for almost any product without driving real differentiation
- overlap with Christensen-Ulwick Jobs-to-Be-Done frameworks creates conceptual confusion
- can become a workshop deliverable disconnected from genuine customer research
- ranking pains and gains is methodologically thin without quantitative customer data.
