Classifies features as basic, performance, or delighters by their effect on customer satisfaction.

The Kano Model, developed by Noriaki Kano and colleagues at Tokyo University of Science in the late 1970s and presented in their 1984 paper 'Attractive Quality and Must-Be Quality', classifies product features by their non-linear effect on customer satisfaction. Five categories distinguish: Must-Be (basic) quality (taken for granted when present, severely dissatisfying when absent — e.g., car brakes that work); One-Dimensional (performance) quality (satisfaction proportional to performance level — e.g., fuel economy); Attractive (delighter) quality (presence delights, absence does not dissatisfy — e.g., heated seats when novel); Indifferent quality (no effect either way); and Reverse quality (presence dissatisfies). The framework's distinctive contribution is the predicted lifecycle in which today's delighters become tomorrow's performance and eventually basic features as customer expectations rise. Kano questionnaires use functional and dysfunctional question pairs to classify features empirically.
