TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) was articulated by Punya Mishra and Matthew Koehler in their 2006 'Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Framework for Teacher Knowledge' (Teachers College Record), extending Lee Shulman's earlier Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) framework (1986). Shulman had argued that effective teaching requires not just Content Knowledge (CK — what teachers know about their subject) and Pedagogical Knowledge (PK — what teachers know about how to teach), but their integration in PCK — knowledge of how to teach this specific content. Mishra and Koehler added the Technology dimension, arguing that effective technology integration similarly requires not just Technology Knowledge (TK), but its integration with content (TCK), pedagogy (TPK), and the full intersection of all three (TPACK). The Venn-diagram representation showing the seven knowledge intersections has become iconic. The framework's central commitment is that effective technology integration is not about technology skills alone but about the integrated knowledge of how specific technologies support specific pedagogical approaches for specific content. TPACK has been substantially influential in teacher education and educational-technology research, particularly in the era of widespread classroom technology adoption.

Common criticisms
- Operationalization of the seven knowledge domains is genuinely difficult — instruments measuring TPACK have shown psychometric weaknesses and the proposed independent dimensions often don't separate cleanly in factor analysis (Cox & Graham 2009 and subsequent work)

- risk of becoming a checklist for evaluating teacher technology use without engaging with substantive pedagogical questions
- rapid technology change means TK content shifts continuously while the framework's structure doesn't

- tension between the framework's analytical complexity and the practical realities of teacher preparation programs
