Puentedura's four levels of technology integration: substitution, augmentation, modification, redefinition.
The SAMR Model was developed by Ruben Puentedura in the early 2010s as a framework for evaluating how technology is being used in instruction, articulating four progressive levels of integration. Substitution: technology acts as a direct substitute for traditional tools with no functional change (typing instead of handwriting; reading a PDF instead of a printed book). Augmentation: technology substitutes with functional improvement (digital text with embedded definitions; word-processing with spell-check). Modification: technology allows significant task redesign (collaborative document editing; multimedia presentations replacing essay submissions). Redefinition: technology enables previously inconceivable tasks (global student collaboration; immediate worldwide audience for student work). The first two levels represent enhancement; the second two represent transformation. The framework's analytical force is in distinguishing meaningful technology use from technology-as-fancy-substitute, with the implication that transformation-level integration produces greater learning benefit than substitution-level.
