The Toyota Production System, developed at Toyota by Taiichi Ohno, Eiji Toyoda, Shigeo Shingo, and others in the decades following World War II, is the manufacturing philosophy and integrated set of practices that produced Toyota's quality and cost advantages and became the template for global Lean Manufacturing. Its two pillars are Just-in-Time (producing only what is needed, when needed, in the quantity needed, signaled by kanban pulls from downstream stations) and Jidoka (autonomation — empowering workers to stop the line on detecting defects, with andon visual signals). The system relentlessly identifies and eliminates muda (waste) across seven (or eight) categories, using value-stream mapping, takt time, standard work, and kaizen continuous improvement, with deep cultural roots in long-tenured workforces, supplier partnerships, and management philosophy that Western imitators have often struggled to replicate.

Common criticisms
- JIT's reliance on stable demand and reliable suppliers proved fragile under COVID-19, semiconductor shortages, and other supply-chain shocks, leading to renewed interest in resilience-vs-efficiency tradeoffs
- cultural specificity to Japanese long-tenure employment, supplier relationships, and management philosophy makes faithful Western adoption difficult
- Western 'lean' implementations have often focused on tools (kanban, 5S) while missing the deeper philosophy
- over-application to settings with high variability (creative work, R&D) misses the system's manufacturing-context fit
- accidental inducement of supplier squeeze when imposed top-down.
