Periodization

Periodization is the systematic structuring of athletic training over time into phases of varying volume, intensity, and specificity to optimize performance for competition while managing fatigue and adaptation. The framework was foundationally developed by Soviet sports scientist Leonid Matveyev, articulated in his 1965 Periodization of Sports Training (Russian original; 1981 English translation as Fundamentals of Sports Training). Matveyev's framework — subsequently called 'classical' or 'linear' periodization — divides the training year into a macrocycle composed of preparatory, competitive, and transition periods, with progressive shifts from high-volume/low-intensity to low-volume/high-intensity training as competition approaches. Subsequent variants include block periodization (Verkhoshansky, Issurin) using concentrated training blocks targeting specific abilities, undulating (or non-linear) periodization with frequent variation, and conjugate sequence periodization combining multiple training emphases. Periodization is foundational across Olympic sport, professional sport, and exercise-science research, with substantial empirical literature on comparative effectiveness of different periodization models.

- James Fisher, James Steele, and others have published critical reviews questioning whether periodization's benefits are robust beyond the simple progressive-overload effect that periodized programs typically incorporate
- the supercompensation model that grounds classical periodization has been substantially questioned in modern exercise science — the simple stress-recovery-supercompensation timeline does not robustly predict performance outcomes, and individual variation in adaptation response is substantial
