Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is the stage-based athlete-development framework developed by Hungarian-Canadian sports scientist Istvan Balyi in the late 1990s, articulated in his 1995 work for Sport Canada and consolidated through the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) initiative beginning 2005. The framework organizes athlete development across the lifespan into stages — typically Active Start (0-6 years), FUNdamentals (6-9 boys / 6-8 girls), Learn to Train (9-12 boys / 8-11 girls), Train to Train (12-16 boys / 11-15 girls), Train to Compete (16-23 boys / 15-21 girls), Train to Win (18+ boys / 17+ girls), Active for Life (any age) — with each stage having appropriate physical-development emphasis, training characteristics, and competition structure. LTAD incorporates concepts of windows of accelerated adaptation, peak height velocity (PHV) as biological-marker reference point, and the FUNdamentals movement-skill foundation. Adopted by Sport Canada, UK Sport, Australian Institute of Sport, USA Hockey, US Lacrosse, and many national sport governing bodies as foundational athlete-development framework, with subsequent debate about empirical foundations and implementation effectiveness.
