Dual-Process Theory
Also known as: System 1 / System 2
Two modes of cognition: fast intuitive and slow deliberative, popularized by Kahneman.
Dual-Process Theory holds that human cognition operates through two qualitatively distinct modes of processing: System 1 (or Type 1), which is fast, automatic, intuitive, associative, parallel, and effortless, generating impressions, intuitions, and rapid pattern recognition; and System 2 (or Type 2), which is slow, deliberate, effortful, sequential, rule-based, and resource-limited, supporting reflection, calculation, and deliberate reasoning. The framework synthesizes converging research lines including Stanovich and West's heuristic-vs-analytic distinction, Sloman's associative-vs-rule-based reasoning, Evans's heuristic-and-analytic theory, and Kahneman and Tversky's heuristics-and-biases program. Daniel Kahneman's popularization in Thinking, Fast and Slow (2011) brought the System 1/System 2 vocabulary to wide public audiences. The framework has broad influence in cognitive psychology, behavioral economics, judgment and decision-making research, and applied domains including clinical assessment and product design. Subsequent debate has questioned whether the two systems are genuinely distinct architectures or simply ends of continua, with current scholarly consensus favoring more nuanced multi-process models.

- System 1/System 2 as architectural distinction has been substantially critiqued — Evans and Stanovich's 2013 review argued for type-not-system framing
- many candidate System 1/System 2 markers (speed, automaticity, effort) don't always align
- some empirical findings cited by Kahneman (notably some priming effects in Thinking, Fast and Slow) have failed to replicate in the social-psychology replication crisis
- binary framing oversimplifies the multiple processes likely involved
- popular adoption tends to reify 'two systems' as if they were brain structures
- alternative frameworks including evolutionary, embodied, and Bayesian accounts offer different organizing principles.
