The Cornell Note-Taking System was developed by Walter Pauk at Cornell University in the 1950s, presented in his 1962 How to Study in College (multiple subsequent editions). The format divides each notebook page into three sections: a wide right-hand column (about 6 inches) for taking notes during class or reading; a narrow left-hand column (about 2.5 inches) used afterward for cue-words, questions, and key terms drawn from the notes; and a bottom section (about 2 inches) for a brief summary of the page's content written within 24 hours after the original notes. The system's pedagogical structure encourages active engagement with material at three points: during the lecture or reading (notes column); shortly after, when reviewing notes to identify cues (cue column); and within 24 hours, when summarizing the page (summary section). Subsequent review involves covering the notes column and using the cue column to test recall — operationalizing active recall and spaced review on the same physical page. The system has been substantially adopted in college study-skills programs and in K-12 secondary education, and remains the most-recognized named note-taking format. Empirical research on Cornell-specific outcomes is limited but the underlying practices (active engagement, cue-based review, summarization) are well-supported.
