Active Recall (also called Retrieval Practice or the Testing Effect) is the empirically-validated technique of strengthening memory through deliberate retrieval of material from memory, rather than through passive re-exposure (re-reading, highlighting, listening again). The effect was first systematically documented by Edwina Abbott (1909) and substantially developed through the latter half of the 20th century by researchers including Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 'Test-Enhanced Learning: Taking Memory Tests Improves Long-Term Retention' (Psychological Science) provided the canonical demonstration: students who studied a passage and then took a test on it remembered substantially more after a week than students who studied the passage twice, despite the test-takers having less total exposure to the material. The mechanism is that retrieval itself is a learning event — the act of pulling information from memory strengthens the retrieval pathway, while passive re-exposure does not. The effect has been replicated across many materials, age groups, and time scales, making it among the most robust findings in educational research. Active Recall is typically paired with Spaced Repetition (Spaced Recall is the most-empirically-supported combination), and is the cognitive mechanism underlying flashcard study, practice-test taking, the Feynman Technique, and many self-quiz tools. Adam Brown's Make It Stick (2014) and Pooja Agarwal's Powerful Teaching (2019) have substantially popularized the research for general audiences and educators.
