Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DoK) was developed by Norman Webb at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, articulated in his 1997 monograph Criteria for Alignment of Expectations and Assessments in Mathematics and Science Education and elaborated in subsequent work. Webb developed DoK as an alignment tool — a way to evaluate whether assessment items and curriculum standards demanded the same cognitive complexity — distinguishing four levels: DoK 1 (Recall and Reproduction — facts, definitions, simple procedures); DoK 2 (Skills and Concepts — applying procedures, summarizing, classifying with multiple steps); DoK 3 (Strategic Thinking — non-routine reasoning, justification, multiple solution paths, supporting claims with evidence); DoK 4 (Extended Thinking — investigations or research extending across multiple sessions, connecting and applying ideas across content areas). The framework gained substantial adoption in US K-12 education through state and federal alignment requirements (No Child Left Behind, subsequent ESSA), with state assessment programs and curriculum frameworks frequently citing DoK levels as required complexity ranges. DoK is often paired or compared with Bloom's Taxonomy — they classify different things (DoK measures cognitive demand of the task; Bloom classifies cognitive process type), but in practice educators often use them similarly with substantial overlap.
