Wardley Mapping ⚑

Wardley Mapping is a strategy and situational-awareness technique developed by Simon Wardley in the mid-2000s while at Canonical (Ubuntu) and progressively elaborated through his Creative-Commons-licensed online book and conference talks. A Wardley Map plots the components of a value chain — anchored at the top by user need and decomposing downward through capabilities and supporting components — against an evolution axis running through four stages: Genesis (novel, custom-built), Custom-Built, Product (rental), and Commodity (utility). The mapping process exposes which components are strategically defensible (those still in genesis or custom-built) versus which should be outsourced or consumed as commodities, and Wardley pairs the maps with doctrine (universal principles like situational awareness and challenge assumptions) and gameplay (context-specific moves like ecosystem plays, fear-uncertainty-doubt, talent raids).

- Component placement on the evolution axis is judgment-heavy and inconsistent across analysts
- small but passionate practitioner community limits broad empirical validation
- predictive claims about climatic patterns are difficult to test
- learning curve is steeper than the apparent simplicity of the diagrams suggests
- mapping artifacts are easy to produce but hard to use to actually drive decisions
- less rigorous treatment of competitive dynamics than Porter-style frameworks.
