Trompenaars' Cultural Dimensions

Also known as: Seven Dimensions of Culture

framework · management · organizing-schema

Alternative cross-cultural framework emphasizing relationships, time, and environment.

Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner's seven-dimension cross-cultural framework, presented in Riding the Waves of Culture (1997), offers an alternative to Hofstede's framework grounded in survey data from 30,000+ managers across 50+ countries. The dimensions are organized around three categories: relationships with people (Universalism vs Particularism, Individualism vs Communitarianism, Neutral vs Emotional, Specific vs Diffuse, Achievement vs Ascription); attitudes to time (Sequential vs Synchronic, Past-Present-Future orientation); and attitudes to environment (Internal vs External Control). The framework draws on Talcott Parsons' pattern variables and Florence Kluckhohn's value orientations as theoretical antecedents and is widely used in cross-cultural consulting and training, particularly within the THT Consulting practice that grew from the original work.
