Triple-Loop Learning is the extension of Argyris and Schön's single-loop and double-loop learning framework (separately enriched), proposing a third learning level that questions not only goals and assumptions (double-loop) but the framework of inquiry itself — how we learn, what we choose to learn about, and the values that determine what counts as legitimate questioning. Where single-loop asks 'are we doing things right?' and double-loop asks 'are we doing the right things?', triple-loop asks 'how do we decide what is right?' — examining the meta-cognitive and epistemic foundations of organizational and individual learning. Triple-loop's specific origins are substantially diffuse — Argyris and Schön did not themselves substantially develop a triple-loop framework, with the concept emerging through subsequent organizational-learning scholarship including: Bill Torbert's substantial action-inquiry tradition (substantial 1970s-2000s development with multiple variants of meta-cognitive learning); Peter Hawkins's articulation in coaching and supervision contexts (Coaching, Mentoring and Organizational Consultancy 2006 with substantial subsequent work); Bob Flood and Norma Romm's work on social systems and emancipatory inquiry (Diversity Management 1996); broader systems-thinking community development. Different authors have offered substantially different triple-loop formulations, creating substantial conceptual variation.
