The Tala System is the rhythmic framework of Indian classical music, organizing time through cyclic patterns (talas) defined by total beat count (mātrās), internal division into vibhāgs (sections) marked by characteristic claps (tālī) and waves (khālī, in Hindustani), and the first beat (sam) as both the cycle's beginning and its principal rhythmic-and-melodic point of resolution. Hindustani classical practice centers on roughly two dozen commonly-performed talas including teen tāl (16 beats), ek tāl (12), jhap tāl (10), rūpak (7), dādrā (6), and kehrwā (8); Carnatic practice uses the seven-tala-with-five-jāti × five-naḍai system producing 175 theoretical talas, of which a smaller subset is regularly performed. The framework is foundational to compositional form (tāl-bound compositions like khyāl bandiśes, kṛtis), improvisational structure (tihāī cadences, korvai constructions), and the substantial rhythmic-improvisation tradition in tabla, mridangam, and other percussion.
