Tacit and Explicit Knowledge
Polanyi's distinction between articulable knowledge and the embodied 'we know more than we can tell.'
The Tacit and Explicit Knowledge distinction was articulated by Hungarian-British polymath Michael Polanyi (chemist, philosopher, economist) in his foundational Personal Knowledge: Towards a Post-Critical Philosophy (1958) and substantially developed in The Tacit Dimension (1966). Polanyi's central insight, captured in his famous phrase 'we know more than we can tell,' is that substantial human knowledge is tacit — embodied, intuitive, experiential — and resists complete articulation in propositional form. Tacit knowledge includes: skills (riding a bicycle, recognizing faces, judging clinical situations) that practitioners can perform but cannot fully describe in rules; perceptual abilities (recognizing patterns, judging quality, sensing social dynamics); understanding gained through substantial experience and immersion that exceeds what manuals or training documents can convey. Explicit knowledge by contrast is articulable in propositional form — facts, rules, formulas, documented procedures. Polanyi argued that all explicit knowledge rests on substantial tacit foundation — even mathematical reasoning depends on tacit understanding of what counts as a valid proof, recognition of relevant similarities, and skill in problem-solving that cannot be fully formalized. The framework has had enormous influence beyond Polanyi's original philosophical context. The substantial 1990s knowledge-management movement substantially adopted the distinction, particularly through Ikujiro Nonaka and Hirotaka Takeuchi's The Knowledge-Creating Company (1995) — their substantial SECI model (Socialization, Externalization, Combination, Internalization) substantially proposed that organizational knowledge creation involves continuous conversion between tacit and explicit forms. Critics including Stephen Gourlay (2006 'Conceptualizing Knowledge Creation: A Critique of Nonaka's Theory') have argued that Nonaka-Takeuchi's interpretation substantively misreads Polanyi — Polanyi treated tacit and explicit as integrated dimensions of knowledge rather than as separable types that can be 'converted.' Despite these debates, the tacit-explicit distinction remains foundational to knowledge management and broader cognitive science.
