Strength of Weak Ties
Granovetter's finding that loose acquaintances bridge networks more effectively than close ties.
The Strength of Weak Ties was articulated by Mark Granovetter in his 1973 American Journal of Sociology paper of that name, with the empirical foundation in his Harvard dissertation research on how professional and managerial workers in Newton, Massachusetts found their jobs. Granovetter found, contrary to common assumption, that most successful job-finders had heard of their job through 'weak ties' (acquaintances) rather than 'strong ties' (close friends and family) — and developed the theoretical explanation that close ties tend to share the same network and information, while weak ties bridge across otherwise-disconnected social networks, providing access to non-redundant information. The argument's structural form is general: weak ties are more likely to be 'bridges' between densely-connected clusters, and information flowing through bridges reaches farther than information staying within clusters. Granovetter's 1985 'Economic Action and Social Structure: The Problem of Embeddedness' substantially extended this work into economic sociology. The strength-of-weak-ties result has been one of the most empirically replicated findings in sociology, with substantial extensions to network theory (Ronald Burt's structural holes, 1992), social capital research (Putnam's bridging vs bonding), and contemporary network science. The result has had substantial practical influence on job-search advice, organizational network analysis, and social-media platform design (LinkedIn explicitly markets weak-tie value).
