Punctuated Equilibrium was articulated by Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould in their 1972 paper 'Punctuated Equilibria: An Alternative to Phyletic Gradualism' (in Schopf, ed., Models in Paleobiology), proposing that the typical pattern observed in the fossil record — long periods of morphological stasis (tens of thousands to millions of years) interrupted by relatively rapid speciation events (geologically rapid, perhaps tens of thousands of years) — should be taken as the actual tempo of evolution rather than dismissed as artifact of fossil-record incompleteness. The framework's central commitments: most evolutionary change occurs during speciation events; species typically remain morphologically stable across most of their durations; evolutionary change is concentrated in branching events rather than continuous lineage transformation. The framework was substantially controversial when proposed because it challenged the gradualist tempo emphasized in Modern Synthesis (though Eldredge and Gould always insisted it was compatible with the synthesis's mechanistic commitments rather than alternative to them). Subsequent debate has substantially clarified: punctuated equilibrium describes a pattern (stasis plus punctuation) that is empirically common in the fossil record though not universal; the speciation events are not 'rapid' in genetic-evolution timescales but rather geologically rapid; the tempo varies across taxa, with marine invertebrates showing strong stasis-punctuation patterns and many other groups showing more graduated change. The framework is now substantially integrated into mainstream evolutionary biology — neither dominant alternative to gradualism nor entirely subsumed by it. Gould's broader hierarchical theory of evolution (developed in The Structure of Evolutionary Theory, 2002, posthumous-completion work) substantially extended punctuated equilibrium into a broader framework about levels of selection and species sorting.
