Population Ecology of Organizations is the framework articulated by Michael T. Hannan and John H. Freeman in 'The Population Ecology of Organizations' (American Journal of Sociology, 1977) and consolidated in Organizational Ecology (1989), treating organizational populations as subject to environmental selection pressures analogous to biological evolution. The framework was developed as a counter-position to adaptive views of organizations (strategic-choice theory and resource dependence) that assume organizations can substantially change in response to environmental pressures. Hannan and Freeman argued organizations exhibit substantial structural inertia — internal and external constraints that resist core-feature change — and that environmental change therefore operates substantially through differential founding and mortality of organizations with different forms rather than through adaptive transformation of existing organizations. The framework introduced density-dependent founding and mortality models, niche-width and r/K selection analogies, and population-level analysis of organizational forms that complemented the individual-organization focus of earlier organizational theory.

- the framework's emphasis on population-level analysis has been argued to underweight strategic-management considerations — even if populations evolve through selection, individual organizational decisions about positioning, capability development, and resource acquisition retain substantial consequence
- the boundary between selection and adaptation is itself contested — what looks like population-level selection may include substantial within-organization adaptation that simply does not change the formal organizational form being tracked
