Pareto Analysis

Identifies the vital few inputs accounting for the majority of outputs.
Pareto Analysis identifies the relatively small subset of inputs, causes, or contributors that account for a disproportionate share of outputs, problems, or value, named after Vilfredo Pareto's observation in 1896 that approximately 80% of land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. Joseph Juran formalized the management application as the 'vital few and trivial many' principle around 1941, popularizing the 80/20 ratio as a managerial heuristic in quality control work. The Pareto chart — a bar chart of categories sorted by frequency or impact, overlaid with a cumulative percentage line — became the canonical visual artifact and is one of the seven basic tools of quality. The 80/20 ratio itself is a heuristic rather than a precise mathematical claim — actual concentrations vary across domains — though many empirical distributions do exhibit substantial concentration that the analysis productively surfaces.

Common criticisms
- 80/20 ratio is a memorable heuristic but actual concentrations vary widely (sometimes 95/5, sometimes 60/40)
- blind application can miss the strategic importance of some 'trivial many' (e.g., long-tail customers in aggregate, or early-warning indicators)
- static snapshot that misses dynamics — categories can move in and out of the vital few
- risk of optimizing for the vital few while neglecting infrastructure or compliance items
- doesn't address the root causes producing the distribution
- categories can be defined in ways that game the analysis.
