Marginal Gains — the 'aggregation of marginal gains' philosophy — is the performance-improvement framework associated with David Brailsford's leadership of British Cycling (Performance Director from 2003) and Team Sky / Team Ineos (founded 2009). The premise: if every component of performance can be improved by 1%, the aggregate effect is substantially greater than the sum of individual improvements due to compounding effects. Brailsford's articulation in interviews from approximately 2010 onward described improving sleep quality (mattress selection, pillow selection), nutrition, hand-washing protocols (to reduce illness during competition), pedal stroke, aerodynamics, mental-skills training, and dozens of other components in pursuit of compounding 1% improvements. British Cycling's Olympic dominance (2008 Beijing 8 golds, 2012 London 8 golds, 2016 Rio 6 golds) and Team Sky / Ineos's seven Tour de France victories (2012-2019, including Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, Egan Bernal) were publicly attributed to the philosophy. The framework has been substantially adopted in business and other performance contexts though its empirical foundation and the specific mechanism by which it produced results has been substantively contested.
