Maqam System
Arabic, Turkish, and Persian framework organizing melodic material through modes (maqamat) with microtonal intervals and characteristic melodic phrases.
The Maqam System is the framework organizing pitch in Arabic, Turkish, Persian, and adjacent Middle Eastern and Central Asian musical traditions, in which a maqām (Arabic; Turkish makam; Persian dastgāh in a related but distinct system) is a substantively complete melodic framework specifying scale-tetrachord (jins, plural ajnās) building blocks, characteristic melodic motion (sayr) including starting region, ascending/descending tendencies, modulation paths, and characteristic cadential formulas. Foundational theoretical works include al-Fārābī's Kitāb al-Mūsīqā al-Kabīr (10th century), Safī al-Dīn al-Urmawī's Risāla al-Sharafiyya (13th century), and the Ottoman-era Cantemir Edvar (1700) and subsequent Şefik Bey systematization. Persian dastgāh tradition was documented and systematized through the 19th-20th centuries by theorists including Mîrzâ Abdollâh and the radif tradition. The system uses microtonal intervals — Arabic theory frequently described in 24 or 53 equal divisions of the octave — that do not align with Western 12-TET tuning.
