The Lindy Effect is Nassim Taleb's formulation of an empirical heuristic — that for non-perishable items (technologies, ideas, cultural artifacts, books) the future life expectancy scales with current age — popularized in Antifragile (2012) and given formal statistical treatment in subsequent Taleb publications. The naming traces to the Lindy delicatessen in New York, where comedians reportedly observed in the 1960s that a comedian's expected remaining career length was proportional to their career length so far; Albert Goldman articulated this as 'Lindy's Law' in a 1964 New Republic article, and Benoit Mandelbrot gave it formal treatment before Taleb's popularization. Formally, the effect corresponds to a Pareto distribution with infinite mean and finite scale — for any object drawn from such a distribution that has survived to age T, its expected additional life is proportional to T. The framework provides a heuristic for evaluating durability claims: books that have remained in print for centuries are more likely to remain in print for additional centuries than recent bestsellers are to remain in print for decades.
