LEED is the certification system developed and administered by the US Green Building Council for environmentally sustainable design, construction, and operation of buildings and neighborhoods. The framework awards points across credit categories (Location and Transportation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation, and Regional Priority), with point totals corresponding to four certification levels: Certified (40-49 points), Silver (50-59), Gold (60-79), and Platinum (80+). Distinct rating systems address different project types — Building Design and Construction, Interior Design and Construction, Building Operations and Maintenance, Neighborhood Development, Homes, and Cities and Communities — with the rating system selected and substantially adapted to project context. LEED has gone through major versions roughly every five to seven years (v1 1998, v2 2000, 2009/v3, v4 2013, v4.1 2019), with LEED v5 in development to substantially expand decarbonization and resilience requirements.
