Imre Lakatos's Methodology of Scientific Research Programmes, presented in his 1970 paper 'Falsification and the Methodology of Scientific Research Programmes' (in Lakatos and Musgrave's Criticism and the Growth of Knowledge), articulates a synthesis between Popper's falsificationism and Kuhn's account of paradigms. Lakatos argued that scientific theories should be evaluated not as isolated falsifiable propositions but as research programmes — extended structures comprising a 'hard core' of central commitments treated as irrefutable by methodological decision, surrounded by a 'protective belt' of auxiliary hypotheses that absorb adjustments in light of anomalies. A research programme is 'progressive' when its successive theory adjustments predict novel facts that are subsequently corroborated, and 'degenerating' when adjustments are merely ad hoc accommodations of anomalies without novel predictive success. Programmes should be abandoned not at first failed prediction (Popper's stricter view) nor only through revolutionary replacement (Kuhn's view) but when they degenerate while a competing progressive programme is available. Lakatos's account preserves Popper's commitment to the rationality of science while accommodating the Kuhnian observation that scientists don't simply abandon theories on first refuting evidence. The framework has been substantial in philosophy of science and economics methodology (where Lakatos's work was specifically influential).
