Just Intonation is the tuning framework based on simple integer frequency ratios derived from the harmonic series, producing acoustically pure intervals (perfect fifth as 3:2, major third as 5:4, minor third as 6:5, octave as 2:1) at the cost of key flexibility. In just intonation, intervals of the same nominal name (e.g., a major third) sound differently depending on which scale degree they are built from, and modulation to distant keys introduces unacceptable wolf intervals. Just intonation traces conceptually to the Pythagorean tradition (perfect fifths and octaves only as ratios) with the major third (5:4) and other simple-ratio intervals introduced through Ptolemy and codified for Renaissance polyphonic practice by Gioseffo Zarlino in Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558). Modern just-intonation advocacy traces to Harry Partch's tonality diamond (Genesis of a Music 1949) and continues through Lou Harrison, Ben Johnston, Larry Polansky, Kyle Gann, and the broader microtonal community.

- Just intonation's keyboard implementation requires either extensive retunability or fixed-pitch instruments restricted to a single key, producing the practical limitations that motivated the historical shift to meantone and equal-tempered systems — the inability to modulate freely was the fundamental practical problem documented across centuries of tuning-system debates
- Helmholtz's On the Sensations of Tone (1863) provided the psychoacoustic foundation for just-intonation aesthetic claims but his specific predictions about beat-rate sensitivity have been refined by subsequent psychoacoustic research
- performance practice for Renaissance and early-Baroque vocal music remains contested between adaptive-just-intonation advocates and equal-tempered or meantone advocates, with empirical studies (Howard, Hellberg, Roederer) suggesting performers actually adopt context-sensitive intonation rather than strict adherence to any single system
- Partch's higher-limit just intonation faces performer-training and instrument-availability barriers that limit performance access
