Inclusive Design
Designing for the full range of human diversity rather than the average user.
Inclusive Design is the design philosophy and methodology that explicitly designs for the full range of human diversity — including but not limited to ability, age, language, culture, gender, and other dimensions of difference — rather than for an idealized 'average' or 'normal' user. The framework was substantially developed through the British Standards Institution's BS 7000-6 (2005, Design management systems — Managing inclusive design), Microsoft's Inclusive Design Toolkit (2015, with substantial subsequent development), and academic-practice work at the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art (founded 1999). The framework's central commitments include: design that works well for one user often works less well for others; designing from the margins (with users typically excluded by mainstream design) often produces better solutions for everyone (the 'curb cut effect' — sidewalk ramps designed for wheelchair users benefit cyclists, parents with strollers, delivery workers); exclusion is the result of mismatched design rather than user limitation (Microsoft's 'Persona Spectrum' framework distinguishes permanent, temporary, and situational disability — someone with one arm permanently, with an arm injury temporarily, or carrying a baby situationally all face similar interface challenges). Inclusive Design overlaps substantially with Universal Design (separately enriched) but with substantively different framings: Universal Design aims to design single solutions usable by all; Inclusive Design accommodates diversity through multiple paths or adaptations. Both descend from disability-rights and accessibility traditions and connect to broader work on human-centered design, equity in design, and design justice (Sasha Costanza-Chock 2020). Inclusive Design has substantial commercial adoption particularly in technology (Microsoft, Apple, Google have substantial inclusive-design programs) and in public services.

Common criticisms
- Implementation varies substantially across organizations — substantial gap between inclusive-design rhetoric and actual product accessibility for many users with disabilities

- tension between Inclusive Design's accommodation framing (multiple paths) and Universal Design's universal-solution framing (single solution for all) creates which-when ambiguity in practice
- tendency to focus on disability dimensions at expense of other diversity dimensions (cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic) that the broader framework includes
