Frame Semantics is the cognitive linguistic framework articulated by Charles J. Fillmore from the late 1970s onward (foundational 1976 'Frame Semantics and the Nature of Language' and 1982 'Frame Semantics' in Linguistics in the Morning Calm), holding that word meanings are understood relative to structured background knowledge — frames — that capture the typical situations, participants, and relationships associated with words. Fillmore's central insight: understanding the word 'restaurant' requires understanding the broader frame including customers, waiters, cooks, menus, food, paying, etc.; understanding 'sell' requires understanding a commercial transaction frame including buyer, seller, goods, money. Words evoke frames, and word meaning cannot be understood independently of the frames they activate. The framework substantially shaped cognitive linguistics and computational linguistics, with major extensions including: Construction Grammar (separately enriched, Fillmore was foundational with Paul Kay and Adele Goldberg); FrameNet (substantial computational lexicon project at Berkeley starting 1997, providing frame-semantic annotations for thousands of English words and substantial parallel projects for other languages); substantial application in natural language processing and AI; integration with Conceptual Metaphor Theory (separately enriched, both within cognitive linguistics tradition); applications in legal interpretation (semantic frames for contractual and statutory language) and political discourse analysis.
