Don Norman's Design Principles
Visibility, feedback, constraints, mapping, consistency, affordance.
Don Norman's Design Principles are the foundational set of design principles for usable interactive systems articulated by Donald A. Norman in The Design of Everyday Things (1988, originally The Psychology of Everyday Things, revised 2013 edition substantially extending the framework). The original principles include: (1) Visibility — make the right parts visible at the right time; (2) Feedback — communicate the results of actions through perceivable signals; (3) Constraints — limit possible actions to prevent errors and guide users; (4) Mapping — relationship between controls and effects should be natural and intuitive (e.g., stove burner controls spatially mapped to burners); (5) Consistency — similar things look and behave similarly; (6) Affordance — design suggests appropriate use through perceivable properties (a chair affords sitting; a button affords pressing); the 2013 revised edition adds Discoverability and Signifiers (the perceivable cues that suggest affordances). Norman's foundational distinction between affordance (action possibility) and signifier (perceivable cue suggesting affordance) substantially refined the often-confused concept of affordance — affordances exist whether or not they're perceivable; signifiers are the design choices that make affordances discoverable. The framework substantially shaped HCI and UX design from the 1990s onward, alongside Nielsen's heuristics. Norman's broader contribution to design includes the user-centered design philosophy (separately enriched in HCD), the gulf of execution and gulf of evaluation (the cognitive distances between user intentions and system actions, and between system state and user understanding), and the seven stages of action. Norman is one of the principal founders of cognitive design and HCI, with substantial influence through Apple (where he was a Vice President of advanced technologies in the 1990s), Nielsen Norman Group consulting (founded 1998), and his sustained writing and teaching.

Common criticisms
- Norman's principles are at high abstraction level requiring substantial interpretive work for specific designs — different designers can apply 'visibility' or 'mapping' to produce substantively different interfaces
- cross-cultural variation in what feels intuitive affects principle application (mappings between controls and effects vary across cultures, e.g., light switch directions)
- the affordance concept has been substantially debated — Norman's design-affordance use differs from James J. Gibson's original ecological-perception framing, and the discipline has spent substantial energy on this dispute
- commercial design education sometimes presents the principles as universal rules without engaging the substantial cognitive psychology underlying them
- integration with contemporary HCI research (predictive processing, embodied cognition, situated action) has been incomplete
- mobile, voice, AR/VR, and AI-mediated interfaces require substantial principle extension that Norman's original framework didn't address
- the principles work better for direct-manipulation interfaces than for AI-mediated interfaces where users may not understand what the system is doing
- tendency to apply Norman's principles in contexts substantially different from his classical examples (door handles, kitchen ranges) without substantive adaptation
- the framework's pedagogical durability sometimes exceeds its currency in contemporary HCI research.
