Six Sigma design cycle: Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify.

DMADV is the Six Sigma design-for-quality cycle used when no existing process exists to improve, or when a process requires fundamental redesign rather than incremental improvement — also known as Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). Define establishes goals consistent with customer demands and enterprise strategy. Measure and identify CTQs (Critical to Quality characteristics), product capabilities, production process capability, and risks. Analyze develops and designs alternatives at the high level. Design develops detailed designs, often using QFD (Quality Function Deployment), DOE (Design of Experiments), and Pugh-style concept selection, with pilots simulating the design. Verify the design, run pilot runs, and hand over to process owners. DMADV emerged in the late 1990s as Six Sigma extended from improving existing processes (DMAIC's domain) to greenfield design, and is closely related to Stage-Gate practices in product development. Multiple alternative DFSS roadmaps exist (IDOV, DMEDI), with DMADV the most widely cited.
