Design Thinking is the human-centered, prototype-driven, iterative problem-solving methodology substantially codified by IDEO (David Kelley, Tim Brown) and Stanford's d.school (Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, founded 2004) from the late 1990s onward, drawing on earlier traditions in design methods (Christopher Alexander, John Chris Jones), participatory design (Scandinavian tradition from 1970s), Herbert Simon's The Sciences of the Artificial (1969), and Robert McKim's Stanford Design Division work (1970s). The framework is typically articulated as a five-stage cycle: (1) Empathize — develop deep understanding of users through observation, interviews, and immersion; (2) Define — synthesize observations into a clear problem statement framed from the user's perspective; (3) Ideate — generate a wide range of possible solutions through divergent thinking before converging on promising directions; (4) Prototype — build cheap, fast, low-fidelity versions of solutions to make ideas tangible; (5) Test — share prototypes with users to gather feedback, iterate. The stages are not strictly sequential — practitioners loop back, reframe, and iterate throughout. The framework's central commitments include human-centered focus on user needs over technology or business assumptions, divergent-then-convergent thinking patterns, bias toward action through prototyping, and embrace of ambiguity. Design Thinking has been substantially adopted in business (IBM, GE, P&G), education (d.school, design-thinking MBA programs), government (UK Government Digital Service, US 18F), and healthcare. The framework has also drawn substantial published critique — Lee Vinsel and Maggie Koerth's 2018 'Design Thinking is a Boondoggle', Natasha Jen's 2017 'Design Thinking is Bullshit', Khaled El-Awady and others — arguing that commercial Design Thinking applications often produce shallow workshop deliverables rather than substantive design improvement, that the framework's claims to enable creativity in non-designers may be overstated, and that the methodology has been substantially commercialized into a consulting product disconnected from its design-research foundations.
