Deliberate Practice is the framework characterizing the specific kind of effortful, feedback-driven, expert-coached practice that K. Anders Ericsson and colleagues identified as associated with expert-level performance, articulated foundationally in Ericsson, Krampe, and Tesch-Römer's 1993 Psychological Review article 'The Role of Deliberate Practice in the Acquisition of Expert Performance.' The original study analyzed violinists at the Berlin Music Academy and found differences in accumulated solitary practice hours among performers of different expertise levels. Deliberate practice is distinguished from mere repetition by four features: a specific learning goal aimed at improving a particular aspect of performance, full attention and effortful engagement, immediate informative feedback (typically requiring expert coaching), and repetition with refinement based on feedback. Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers (2008) popularized the framework as the '10,000-hour rule,' a reductive formulation Ericsson himself rejected. The Macnamara, Hambrick, and Oswald 2014 meta-analysis showed deliberate practice explains less variance in expert performance than originally claimed.
