Crystal Methods is the family of agile software-development methodologies developed by Alistair Cockburn beginning in the early 1990s, articulated in Cockburn's Agile Software Development (2002) and Crystal Clear: A Human-Powered Methodology for Small Teams (2004). The framework is explicitly a family — different methodologies sized by team size and project criticality, named by colors (Crystal Clear for small low-criticality teams, Yellow, Orange, Red, Magenta for progressively larger or more critical projects). The methodology emphasizes that different projects require different process weights, with Cockburn's foundational observation that lightweight methods work for small co-located teams with frequent communication while larger or safety-critical projects require additional ceremony. Crystal shares core Agile-Manifesto principles (frequent delivery, reflective improvement, osmotic communication) but distinguishes itself by explicit tailoring to project context rather than prescribing uniform practices. Crystal Methods has had limited adoption compared to Scrum and XP but substantial intellectual influence on agile-tailoring tradition.
