The framework's central reframing rejects the 'cradle to grave' linear economy (raw materials → product → waste) in favor of 'cradle to cradle' circular flows where waste is eliminated through design that channels materials into either: biological cycles (where biodegradable products return safely to ecosystems as nutrients) or technical cycles (where durable materials remain in industrial use indefinitely without quality degradation). The framework's central commitments include: 'waste equals food' — designed waste streams should be inputs for other processes; respect for diversity (cultural, biological, conceptual); use renewable energy throughout production and use; eliminate toxics rather than reducing or managing them.
