Conservation of Resources Theory

Hobfoll's stress theory: people seek to acquire and protect valued resources.
Conservation of Resources Theory was developed by Stevan Hobfoll and presented in 'Conservation of Resources: A New Attempt at Conceptualizing Stress' (American Psychologist, 1989), proposing a resource-based account of psychological stress. The central tenet is that individuals strive to obtain, retain, protect, and foster the things they value (resources), and that psychological stress occurs when (1) resources are threatened with loss, (2) resources are actually lost, or (3) resources fail to be gained following significant resource investment. Resources are categorized into four types: objects (physical possessions), conditions (e.g., tenure, marital status), personal characteristics (skills, traits like self-efficacy), and energies (e.g., time, money, knowledge). Two key principles: resource loss is disproportionately more powerful than resource gain (asymmetry), and people must invest resources to protect against resource loss, recover from losses, and gain resources (loss spirals and gain spirals can result). COR has been widely applied to workplace stress and burnout research, often paired with or compared to the Job Demands-Resources Model.

Common criticisms
- Resource categories can become so broad as to fit almost any factor as a 'resource', limiting falsifiability
- the asymmetry principle (loss > gain) is not unique to COR (compare prospect theory's loss aversion)
- operationalization of resources varies widely across studies, complicating cumulative empirical work
- Halbesleben et al. 2014 review noted measurement and definitional inconsistencies
- substantial overlap with related stress theories raises questions about distinct contribution
- less precise predictions than some alternatives (e.g., JD-R two-process model)
- cultural variability in what counts as a resource underexplored.
